Case Western Reserve University is one of the nation’s major private research universities, with undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in more than 100 fields of study. Several schools and colleges include research and educational strengths of interest to the biomedical industry. The Case School of Engineering includes seven departments in engineering and applied science and several interdisciplinary centers. Columbus State Community College (CSCC) serves more than 30,000 students, offering two-year career & technical programs in more than 55 areas of business, health, public service, human service, and engineering technologies. CSCC also allows students to take the first two years of a bachelor’s degree through the College of Arts and Science, then transfer to a four-year college. The Community Education and Development Division offers continuing education classes, licensure courses and personal enrichment courses. The CSCC Distance Learning division offers a variety of online courses. K-12 Initiatives at Columbus State include programs for high school students. The Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools (EFCTS) Bioscience Program is located at Gahanna Lincoln High School. Students in this program gain intense experience in a state-of-the-art clinical facility performing various experiments as part of the research-based curriculum. Students also study and practice proper lab data reporting techniques. For students that have dreams of becoming a scientist, engineer, or medical professional, get started in the Bioscience Technologies program located in the state-of-the-art laboratory in Clark Hall of Gahanna Lincoln High School. Areas of study include: molecular biology, microbiology, plant technology, career exploration, cloning, data reporting & presentation, environmental engineering, and experiment design.

Loveland High School Biotech

The Biotechnology program at Loveland High School is one of very few Career Tech programs housed in a traditional high school setting. The program is partnered with Cincinnati State. The students completing the biotechnology program earn 4 high school credits and 7 semester hours from Cincinnati State. The junior year covers the following: standard laboratory operating procedures, microbiology, nucleic acids, rDNA, PCR, proteomics, immunology and forensics. The senior year reinforces the same skills taught in the junior year, but does so with different scientific topics as the focus. Those topics include: environmental biotech, agricultural biotech, fermentation technologies, and bioinformatics. In addition, senior biotech students must also complete a Capstone Project. These projects are developed by the students and are defended at a competition in the spring of their senior year.
